OneNote: Clearing Cache

Introduction

Clearing the OneNote cache can help resolve various issues such as syncing errors, slow performance, and freezing. By following the instructions provided in this article, you can easily clear the cache in OneNote and get back to using it without any hindrances.

Some of the top reasons to clear the OneNote cache include the following:

  • Enhancing application performance: OneNote’s responsiveness and overall speed can be directly impacted by the size of the cache. Removing outdated or unnecessary cache files can help optimize the app’s performance and provide a more seamless note-taking experience.

  • Resolving synchronization errors: Cache issues can prevent OneNote from syncing your changes with the online or shared notebooks properly, which may lead to lost or outdated information. Clearing the cache addresses such errors by forcing the application to download a fresh copy of the notebook and resynchronize.

  • Freeing up storage space: Over time, cache files may take up a significant amount of storage on your device. Clearing the cache can free up some storage space, ensuring your device functions optimally.

  • Troubleshooting software glitches: Corrupted cache files can cause unexpected errors or issues while using OneNote. Clearing the cache can help resolve certain software glitches and restore the app’s functionality.

Let’s get into details about how to clean the OneNote cache.

Backup your OneNote data

Before deleting cache files, creating backup copies of your notebooks is crucial to prevent accidental data loss. You can do this by exporting each section or the entire notebook to a local or cloud storage location.

  1. Choose File > Options.

  2. In the OneNote Options dialog box, choose Save & Backup.

  3. On the right, under Save, choose Back Up All Notebooks Now.

  4. When you see the notice that the backup is successfully completed, click OK.

Finding the Cache folder

Navigate to the following folder:

C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneNote\16.0

Delete cache files

To clear the cache, navigate to C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneNote\16.0\cache. You’ll find numerous cache files in the cache folder. Select and delete all of these files. By clearing the cache all notebooks must re-sync. This effectively resets each notebook.

Reopen OneNote

Launch the OneNote application once again. The cache files will be automatically recreated, and your notebooks should be synchronized with the latest changes.
