How to install Office on your home computer
Introduction
Franklin County employees with a Microsoft 365 license are permitted to install the Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, OneDrive, etc.) on home computers, tablets, and smartphones, and use those devices to access County data (with some restrictions).
These instructions will help you install Office apps on your home computer, whether you’re using current-generation Windows 10 or macOS.
Never store County documents or data on personal devices; store them in your County OneDrive account or on County network drives
Install Office on Windows 10 or macOS
On your Windows or macOS computer
open a web browser and visit the Office 365 website: http://office.com
On the Office home page, click the Sign in button, then follow all the prompts asking for your email address, your network password, PingID authentication, and so forth, until you reach the Office 365 logged-in site
Click the Install Office button, then select the Office 365 apps option from the pop-up menu
You will immediately get a pop-up window explaining that the Office 365 installer is downloading
Follow the on-screen instructions to find and start the downloaded installer app.
Allow the installation to complete.
The following screen shots are from Windows 10. The steps and screen shots on macOS may vary somewhat, but the process is generally the same.
When installation is complete, open any of the downloaded Office apps
You should get a pop-up window asking you to Sign in to activate office.
Confirm your email address and click Continue
Follow the series of login steps presented to Activate Office
Enter your email address, click Next
Enter your network password, click Next
Authenticate your login with PingID (if needed)
On Windows 10, you may be asked whether you want to “Use this account everywhere on your device”
If you leave the checkbox checked, your personal device will be controlled by security policies set by the County (requiring drive encryption, requiring passwords of a certain length, etc.).
In most cases we recommend you uncheck the checkbox called “Allow my organization to manage my device”
Then click Yes
On the “You’re all set!” screen, click Done
If a license agreement window pops up, click Accept
The Office apps are now installed and ready to go!
Additional Notes
Your Office 365 app licenses will be terminated at termination of employment
The County collects data on all documents created, edited, or saved in Office 365, especially if those documents contain sensitive information
While you can use Office 365 apps to create or edit personal documents on your personal devices, never store personal documents on County systems
For most Office 365 tasks (checking email, editing documents) you don’t have to install the full Office apps on your computer. You can do most things right from any web browser with the web-based versions of Outlook ,Word, Excel, etc.
