Install Office 365 apps on your personal devices
Introduction
Active Franklin County staff are permitted, under Microsoft licensing terms, to install the Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, OneDrive, etc.) on home computers, tablets, and smartphones, and use those devices to access County data.
These instructions will help you install Office apps on your home computers and mobile devices, whether you’re using current-generation Windows, macOS, Android, iPhone, or iPad devices.
Important Notes
Your Office 365 license will be terminated at termination of employment
Never store County documents or data on your home computer; store them on County network drives or in your County OneDrive account
The County collects information on all documents created or edited in Office 365, especially if those documents contain sensitive information
While you may use Office 365 apps to create or edit personal documents on your personal devices, never store those personal documents on County systems
Instructions: Windows 10 / macOS
On your Windows or macOS computer, open a web browser and visit the Office 365 website: http://office.com
If you already signed in to Office 365 on this browser, skip to Step 2.
On the Office home page, click the Sign in button
then follow all the prompts asking for your email address,
your network password
PingID authentication and so forth, until you reach the Office 365 logged-in site
For most Office 365 tasks (checking email, editing documents) you don’t have to install Office apps on your computer. You can do most things from any web browser with the web-based versions of Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.
Click the Install Office button, then
Select the Office 365 apps option from the pop-up menu
You will immediately get a pop-up window explaining that the Office 365 installer is downloading.
Follow the on-screen instructions to find and start the downloaded installer app.
Allow the installation to complete.
The following screen shots are from Windows 10. The steps and screen shots on macOS X will vary somewhat, but the process is similar overall.
When installation is complete, open any of the downloaded Office apps.
You should get a pop-up window asking you to Sign in to activate office.
Confirm your email address and click Continue
Follow the series of login steps presented to Activate Office.
Enter your email address, click Next
Enter your network password, click Next
Authenticate your login with PingID (if needed)
On Windows 10, you may be asked whether you want to “Use this account everywhere on your device.”
If you leave the checkbox checked, your personal device will be controlled by security policies set by the County (requiring drive encryption, requiring passwords of a certain length, etc.).
In most cases we recommend you uncheck the checkbox called “Allow my organization to manage my device”
Then click Yes
On the “You’re all set!” screen, click Done
If a license agreement window pops up, click Accept
Instructions: Android, iPhone, iPad
On your mobile device, go to your app store and search for the Microsoft Office apps you would like to install on your device.
On Android devices, you can find all of Microsoft’s mobile apps on the Google Play store.
On iPhones and iPads, you can find all of Microsoft’s mobile apps on the App Store.
For more info, check out Microsoft’s home page for mobile apps here: microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/mobile
Once downloaded, tap your preferred mobile app’s icon to get started.
On the first Microsoft mobile app you launch, you’ll be asked to login to Office 365 with your County email address and network password.
If you are off the County network, you may have to authenticate your login with PingID.
Your login is then shared from the first Office app to the others – you should not have to login for each one.
Congratulations!
Whether you’re at home on your own computer or on your mobile device out and about, you’ve now got access to your Franklin County email, calendar, documents, and anything else you’ve stored in Office 365. You can edit documents and share updates with colleagues from anywhere.
