How to setup PingID *without* a smartphone for remote multi-factor authentication
Introduction
If you need to access Franklin County email, calendars, contacts, OneDrive contents, our VPN, and many other services from remote sites (home, coffee shop, hotel, etc.) you must use a service called PingID to validate your identity when logging in.
This Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) service protects County data from security threats like account/password theft and remote user impersonation. In short, it proves you are who you say you are by combining something you know (your password) with something you have (your smartphone or other device).
These instructions are specifically for users that do not have or cannot use a smartphone, but need to use a mobile phone with texting abilities or a voice phone number.
There are two options for setting up MFA if you don’t have a smartphone device:
SMS, which will send you a passcode
VOICE, which will call you (and leave a voicemail) with a passcode
With these options, you’ll need to enter the passcode into the PingID prompt when logging in.
If you have a smartphone, stop here and use the smartphone-specific PingID instructions here instead. The PingID smartphone app experience is far superior to using text messages or voice calls. Additionally, PingID does not collect data about you, nor does the app grant Franklin County any rights on your device.
The voice number or SMS text number you use to complete registration will be the phone number you will always be used to authenticate in the future. For example, if you use your desk phone at work, you will only be able to authenticate logins while you’re at your desk. Therefore, we recommend using a number or device that’s close to where you will be working remotely.

Setting up PingID
Open a web browser on a desktop or laptop computer and navigate to: Ping MFA Setup
Enter your username and password at the Ping Sign On prompt
Click Start button
click SMS or VOICE options
Enter your phone number and click Next button

Check your text messages for a passcode and enter that passcode into the Authentication prompt. | Check your voicemail for a passcode and enter that passcode into the Authentication prompt. |
You’ll be presented with a Welcome message. You can click Get Started to learn more about PingID, or click Dismiss.
Now that you’re logged in to the PingID system, you can click the person icon in the upper-right corner and select Devices to see what devices you have configured.
You can add more devices or edit the devices there if you like. For example, you may want more than one way to be contacted by PingID, in case you don’t have your primary device with you.

With PingID setup to text or call you, you’re ready to securely login to Office 365 on the web (office.com) or perform other remote work tasks from anywhere – home, coffee shops, hotels, etc.
